Current Training Schedule
Foster parents need six hours of training annually to renew their foster care license. Training is a key to parenting the special needs many foster and adoptive children exhibit. IFAPA offers the following three-hour and six-hour trainings for foster, adoptive and kinship families. PLEASE NOTE: As of October 2009, with the exception of CPR, First Aid and Mandatory Reporter classes, foster parents cannot receive training credit for any class that they have previously attended and used for re-licensing.
DID YOU KNOW? In 2009, IFAPA offered 168 trainings to foster, adoptive and kinship parents.
About IFAPA's CPR & First Aid Trainings
All foster parents shall be certified in CPR and First Aid every three years through a nationally recognized training organization or by an equivalent certified trainer. Foster parents shall maintain a certificate indicating the date of training and expiration. Current foster homes who are licensed by October 1, 2009 must complete the training by October 1, 2010. All foster parents shall complete training in CPR and First Aid in the first ten months of licensure. IFAPA understands that this is a new requirement that DHS has issued for foster families; however, please be aware that IFAPA is not able to provide enough CPR / First Aid trainings to accommodate all of the foster families in Iowa. Due to the equipment needed and ratios of trainer to trainee required by the Red Cross and American Heart Association, classes are bound to fill up quickly. If you cannot get info one of IFAPA's classes, please see our CPR / First Aid page for other class options. IFAPA will accept credit card payments for CPR / First Aid classes which can be paid online. Please contact smiles@ifapa.org to receive the link to pay with a credit card otherwise checks can be mailed to our office once you have registered for your CPR / First Aid class.
About IFAPA Trainings
All three-hour and six-hour trainings are held on Saturdays, unless otherwise noted. Please be sure to double check the time of your training class. Six-hour classes will provide a one-hour lunch break, on your own. Children are not permitted at these trainings and child care will not be provided. All of IFAPA's trainings are approved for foster parent credit. After registering for a class, you can expect a confirmation email about one week prior to the training date. This confirmation e-mail will tell you the location of the class and include information for the training location. Please be sure IFAPA has your e-mail address. For those who do not have an email address, a confirmation letter will be mailed out.
For license renewal, foster parents need to provide their licensing worker with a copy of their training certificate and the Foster Parent Training Report form (470-2540).
PLEASE NOTE: Some of our classes fill up quickly, while other classes must be cancelled because the registration numbers are too low. For questions about inclement weather / class cancellations, see the training requirements page.
